The HSK (hànyǔ shuǐpíng kǎoshì) (Chinese Proficiency Test ) is the only authorized test on Mandarin Chinese for non-native speakers. The HSK exam is similar to the TOFEL exam for non-native speakers of the English language.
The HSK exam is being held by Hanban, a non-governmental organization affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China.
According to estimation in 2010 over 600,000 Chinese learners have taken part in the exam and this number is growing at a rapid rate. In the Netherlands, you can easily take the HSK exam at the University of Leiden.
The HSK exam consists of six levels. For each level, your vocabulary is roughly as follows:

Level 1: you can understand and use simple Chinese words and phrases, meet basic needs for communication and possess the ability to follow further Chinese language studies.
Level 2: you have an excellent understanding of basic Chinese and can communicate simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
Level 3: you can communicate in Chinese at a basic level in daily, academic and professional life. You can manage most communication in Chinese when travelling in China.
Level 4: you are able to make conversation in Chinese on a wide range of topics and to communicate fluently with native Chinese speakers.
Level 5: you can read Chinese newspapers and magazines, enjoy Chinese films and plays, and give a full-length speech in Chinese.
Level 6: you can easily comprehend written and spoken information in Chinese and can effectively express yourself in Chinese, both orally and on paper.

I'm very grateful that I decided to take the HSK prep class with Xian. In just few classes, I was able to pass the exam without so much stress.
